| ALBANY NEW YORK - JULY 7, 07 VA Hospital Locates First Missing Person in Project Lifesaver! |
AFTER ACTION REPORT
From : Lt. Al Articolo, Project Lifesaver Coordinator
On 7-2-07 at 1800 we had our first missing Project Lifesaver, enrollee. Upon notification that he was missing from Ward 9B, Disp. Garcia recognized that the missing patient was a Project Lifesaver participant and immediately notified the shift supervisor. Sgt. Loomis notified the Police Chief and Officer Japour went directly to the equipment and began his Electronic Search. The ESU team was ready to respond from home in case the search went off property but due to Officer Japour’s familiarity with the equipment the ESU activation was not necessary. He followed the FM frequency to Ward 9A. By now the automatic door locks had engaged and the patient could not leave the Ward. Tom trusted his training and the equipment; it led him into Ward 9A to find the patient wandering around. The patient did not know he was considered missing because of his mental state and was not calling out for help. Tom gave him assistance back to his Ward.
A couple of things here are important to mention.
The dispatcher immediately identified the Missing person as a Project Lifesaver participant.
The OIC started the chain of events that resulted in team members assembling and ready to go on a moments notice.
Officer Japour’s familiarity with the equipment gave him the steady confidence needed to carry out a textbook search with no flaws.
This was a great testament to the program, and how it works when dedicated Police officers take the initiative to be involved above and beyond.
The $$$ saved from recalling staff for a High Risk search.
The VA was saved the embarrassment of having to call family members and let them know that we lost their loved one.
Wanderguard was tested and it was working properly but somehow he got out, never trust anything a %100.
All the appropriate information has been forwarded to headquarters in Virginia and they are pleased, our role in N.Y. state will be developing further as time goes by. We have been in communication with our western V.A. counter parts and they have shown interest in joining this initiative, we welcome their interest in a great program and I envision coverage for the whole upstate N.Y. area with our combined efforts.
I can’t say enough of how proud I am of how the search was conducted and the follow through by all involved. Great Job. We are truly saving lives and “Bringing Loved One’s Home.”
